Borough officials recognize emergency workers

As Blawnox officials said goodbye to 2007 and hello to 2008, they took a moment to say thank you to several individuals who went above and beyond.

Mayor Tom Smith, prior to last month's council meeting, issued awards to firefighters and police officers who helped save the lives of others.

First recognized were Blawnox volunteer firefighters Bryan Krause and Ed Benaglio who rescued a girl from a burning house in O'Hara.

The two were presented by Smith with a proclamation from Sen. Jim Ferlo for their act of bravery.

The award stated, in part, that their act of courage was greatly appreciated.

Councilman Steve Krause, Bryan's father, later said that every firefighter is prepared to risk his own life to save another, but many never have to.

When his son had to do so, he was ready.

I'm kinda proud of that boy," said Krause.

Smith then recognized several Blawnox and O'Hara police officers who quickly evacuated the Blawnox Hi-Rise during a recent fire there.

Because of their quick work, said Smith, no injuries occurred.

Members of the Blawnox Police Department recognized were Chief George Bucha, and officers Jeff Stinebiser and Trevor Okonak.

O'Hara officers honored were Dan Golembiewski, Scott Slagel and Kevin Carney.

The officers, said Smith, were recognized for their "selfless, noble and professional conduct."

He also said they are fitting role models for others to emulate.

After presenting the awards, Smith, who has been involved with Blawnox government for the last 40 years, said he has never been more proud of a police department or volunteer fire department than he is of the current ones.

"You do a wonderful job," he said. "Keep up the good work."
